If I trash 1 or more Gears from this effect, do I have to add one to my hand even if I don't want to?
Yes.
If I choose a Gear with cost equal to the value of a friendly Gig, do I have to play it for free, or can I just add it to my hand?
You may add it to your hand if you don't want to play it immediately. (But if you play it later, you must pay its cost normally.)
