When a Unit or Legend equipped with The Relic is defeated, do I move any equipped Gear on it to the bottom-deck, too?

No. The Unit/Legend moves to the trash first, so any Gear (including The Relic) remains in the trash when you bottom-deck the Unit/Legend.
